Lewes FC announces Christmas campaign to boost ownerships and help BHT

Invest in prevention to end homelessness for good

Andy Winter, BHT’s Chief Executive, has called for investment in prevention services in order to help end homelessness and rough sleeping for good. Speaking at the annual conference of the National Housing Federation’s Smaller Housing Associations Conference, which was held online this month, Andy Winter said that councils like Brighton and Hove City Council, working in partnership with others, did “incredibly well to accommodate so many people during the first pandemic lockdown”, but warned that a different approach is needed to end homelessness for good. BHT’s advice centres remain open in lockdown

BHT’s advice centres will again remain open over the national lockdown period, providing specialist housing, immigration and benefits advice to vulnerable people within our local communities. This will mean that more people can stay in their homes – last year our advice centres in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings prevented 927 households from becoming homeless. While our offices are not currently open for drop-in appointments, we are providing our usual advice by telephone, email and other media. The Autumn 2020 edition of Lighthouse Magazine, our quarterly magazine for tenants, is out now. Articles cover a variety of topics, including new ways we are supporting our LGBT+ communities, an update from the Choir with No Name and information about flu jabs, the Warm Home Discount scheme and free fire safety assessments. The annual Brighton Legal Walk takes place today 21 September, aiming to raise much needed funds for local advice services in Brighton. These include Citizen’s Advice, Money Advice Plus, Possability People and BHT’s Brighton Advice Centre. MP Sally-Ann Hart visits Hastings Advice Centre

The Member of Parliament for Hastings and Rye, Sally-Ann Hart, visited BHT’s Hastings Advice Centre on 4 September to learn more about its work in preventing homelessness. Last year the Hastings Advice Centre, which is based at Renaissance House, London Road, St Leonard’s, prevented 346 households from becoming homeless, including 73 at the Court Duty scheme that operates at Hastings County Court. The Hastings Advice Centre is run by BHT and is funded jointly by the government’s Legal Aid Agency and Hastings Borough Council. Free fire safety assessments for your home

Is your home safe from fire? East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are currently offering free fire safety in the home telephone assessments to people living in East Sussex and Brighton and Hove. Their Home Safety visits can now be carried out virtually over the phone, so that risks associated with the current Covid-19 pandemic can be minimised.
