The following update was compiled for the Community Works March 2020 newsletter. BHT provides specialist legal housing advice in Brighton (as well as in Hastings and Eastbourne), from specialist solicitors and advisers who have years of knowledge and experience in this field. The focus of BHT’s Housing Advice Service is to prevent homelessness; we aim to help clients to remain in their own home or ensure they are rehoused. New high harm domestic abuse perpetrator unit launched in Sussex

New high harm domestic abuse perpetrator unit launched in Sussex BHT is part of a new multi-agency unit, led by Sussex Police, that has started work this week to tackle some of the county’s most prolific and harmful domestic abusers. With £402,000 Government funding secured by Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne, the new High Harm Domestic Abuse (DA) Perpetrator Unit will seek, identify and target the most active and dangerous serial perpetrators of DA, uncovering and addressing the reasons why they offend. Help with your energy costs this winter

Brighton & Hove Energy Services Co-op (BHESCo) has been awarded additional funding to continue supporting local households with their energy costs this winter. BHESCo can offer free one-to-one advice to help you reduce costs and improve the warmth and comfort of your home. BHT tenants and clients can contact BHESCo for advice on finding a cheaper energy tariff, applying for the £140 Warm Home Discount Scheme, or tackling existing debts with energy companies. BHT Chief Executive calls for vaccines for homeless people and those supporting them

The chief executive of Brighton Housing Trust, Andy Winter, has written to Brighton and Hove Members of Parliament, Peter Kyle, Caroline Lucas and Lloyd Russell-Moyle, asking them to urge Nadhim Zahawi MP, the Minister for COVID Vaccine Deployment, to include homeless people in the priority groups for those to receive the Covid vaccine, together with frontline workers who support them. Give warm socks to those in need this Christmas

BHT is pleased to be part of Govia Thameslink Railways’ Great Sock Appeal again this year, one of six charity partners working with rough sleepers to provide an everyday basic that makes a huge difference. Like many things this year the appeal has gone virtual, with people being asked to donate online with the aim of raising £8,344 to purchase 4,172 pairs of socks to match the 2019 total. BHT launches 2020 Christmas Appeal!

BHT has launched its 2020 Christmas appeal with a video asking people to help us “end homelessness before it begins”, highlighting the crucial role that advice plays in enabling people to keep their homes. BHT’s advice centres in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings last year prevented 927 households from becoming homeless. Our appeal video was generously donated by award-winning local company Big Egg Films.
