BHT Sussex appoints new Chair

Here at BHT Sussex we are delighted to announce that we have appointed Kelvin MacDonald as our new Chair of Trustees. He will take over from long-standing Chair, Joan Mortimer, in December. Kelvin is a Senior Fellow at the Department of Land Economy at Cambridge University and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. He is a Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Communities, Housing and Local Government Select Committee and a part-time Senior Lecturer at the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Brighton. Tackling climate change at BHT Sussex

This July BHT Sussex launched a new Environmental Strategy, acknowledging the climate crisis as the biggest threat to humanity in the coming years. The urgent need for action to reduce our collective impact on our environment was highlighted in August 2021, when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published their latest report. This year we have seen increasing extreme weather events – a cold, dry spring followed by exceptional rainfall through the summer. New funding for project supporting working homeless people

A BHT Sussex project that helps people who are homeless to get off the streets and into employment has successfully secured an additional three years of funding from the National Lottery Community Fund. The project, which is called Accommodation for Work, is the only one of its kind in the city, and provides temporary accommodation and support for people who are homeless and working or looking for work. The Accommodation for Work project has been running for the last ten years and has housed 330 people over that period, in shared houses in Brighton and Hove. Residents are supported by … Read more

Sun cream needed at First Base

BHT Sussex is appealing for donations of sun cream, reusable water bottles, and other items for clients at our day centre First Base, to help protect our clients in the summer sun. First Base helps homeless people in Brighton and Hove by providing food, showers, clean and dry clothes, and support to get off the streets. First Base as remained open throughout the pandemic to supporting rough sleepers in our city. Support local homelessness charities through Make Change Count

Make Change Count is a local fundraising campaign supporting charities and organisations across Brighton and Hove working with people to help find a permanent solution to their homelessness. The campaign links BHT Sussex and other local organisations experienced in supporting rough sleepers and preventing homelessness. These organisations, like many in the city, are currently working during the Covid crisis to provide connections to services and help people meet their basic needs. Biking fundraiser a big success for BHT Sussex!

Well over one hundred locals took part in our annual fundraiser Bike It Brighton, held last Sunday 11 July, to raise money for rough sleepers in Brighton and Hove. With the help of sponsors JMR Property Maintenance and Infinity Surveying the event has raised an impressive £10,984. Cycle rides on the day began and finished at Preston Park velodrome, with participants choosing between a 30- or 60-mile cycle challenge across the South Downs, with fully signposted and scenic routes. BHT Sussex trials new way of supporting homeless people in Brighton

BHT Sussex is trialling a new quick and easy way of helping homeless people in the city, with a ‘tap to donate’ device mounted in the window of our central offices at 144 London Road. Members of the public can simply tap their card or phone on the window to donate £3 to us. We are the first charity in Brighton to set up a permanent contactless public donation point in this way. Record numbers joining Bike It Brighton this Sunday!

More than a hundred people have signed up to take part in our flagship fundraiser Bike It Brighton this Sunday 11 July, and it’s not too late to join them! The event begins and ends at Preston Park velodrome and participants can choose between a 30- or 60-mile cycle challenge across the South Downs, with fully signposted and beautifully scenic routes. Bike It Brighton update following the delay in Covid lockdown easing

Due to the increase in covid infection rates in Brighton and Hove BHT Sussex is having to cancel part of its Bike It Brighton charity cycle event on 11th July at the Preston Park Velodrome.  However, the 30 and 60 mile rides across the South Downs will go ahead as planned. Choir for people who have experienced homelessness able to meet again

The Choir with No Name Brighton (CWNN Brighton) have finally been able to meet up again in person after more than a year of online rehearsals due to Covid restrictions. This choir for people who have experienced homelessness and housing marginalisation is run in partnership between the national Choir with No Name charity and BHT Sussex. It is a vital support network for some of the most isolated people in the city.
