BHT staff will be joining the annual Hastings and Brighton Legal Walks taking place on 9 and 10 September to raise crucial funds for local advice agencies. You can support them here.
Funds raised will go to BHT’s Brighton and Hastings Advice Centres, as well as other local agencies Citizens Advice 1066, Hastings Advice and Representation Centre, Citizen’s Advice, Money Advice Plus and Possability People.
The Legal Walks are organised by London Legal Support Trust which supports law centres and legal advice agencies in London and the South East. BHT staff will be joining other local lawyers and advisers on the 10km sponsored walks to raise awareness of and funds for important legal advice services.
The services that BHT’s Brighton and Hastings based Advice Centres provide include specialist housing and welfare benefits advice, an immigration legal service and a Court Duty Scheme which provides last-minute emergency advice for people facing eviction. Last year alone they supported 996 people with specialist housing advice and prevented 360 people from becoming homeless. Their Court Duty Schemes provided representation in 365 cases where people were facing eviction, resulting in a further 310 families not losing their home.
Suzanne Hennell, BHT’s Senior Advice Manager, said
We are so grateful to everyone who takes part in these walks every year, which raise much needed funds for BHT’s Advice Centres and others providing essential legal advice to vulnerable local people. With cuts to Legal Aid, services like ours are under pressure, and fundraising events like this are really important in helping us to continue our work to ensure that people can have access to justice regardless of their circumstances.
